«- What is Dialog's eLinking service?
Dialog's eLinks provide a hyperlink from an
abstract record on DialogWeb, DialogSelect,
Dialog1, DialogPRO, DialogLink 5 and Dialog
Intranet Toolkit directly to the full-text electronic
record provided by a partner publisher or journal
aggregator. This service provides a streamlined
method for retrieving the full-text of an eLink
article to which an organization subscribes.
«- Is there a charge for Dialog's eLinking
service?
No. Anyone who has a Dialog account
can use the service.
«- Do I have to contact Dialog in order
to set up my organization's eLinks?
No. The subscription manager allows you to
set up your eLinks, and you can set different
subscription groups in order to manage access
to different journals. Consult the tutorial
to see how the subscription manager works.
«- What does the full-text record include?
That depends on the record. You will always
be able to view full-text. However, if the
record on the partner's site includes diagrams,
images or photographs, these too will be included.
«
- Do
eLinks exist in all Dialog
databases?
No. eLinks are designed for use with databases
that provide abstract records (i.e., bibliographic
databases). Please see the list of available
Dialog databases.
«- Will you add more databases?
Yes. As we continue to partner with more aggregators and publishers,
we will expand the service into other databases.
«- Are eLinks available in Dialog Alerts?
Yes. eLinks (e-journal linking) are available
in classic Alerts delivered as HTML inline,
HTML attachment, and TAG format Alerts delivered
by email. You must select a format that generates
eLinks (MEDIUM, LONG, FULL, or equivalent UDF),
as set up in products like DialogClassic Web,
DialogWeb or DialogLink 5. Additionally you
need to have been set up for eLinks. Contact
your sales person or the Knowledge Center for
more information.
eLinks also will appear in Alerts set up on
DialogSelect, Dialog1, DialogPRO, and Dialog
Intranet Toolkit Custom Solutions, though for
these Alerts the user receives a hyperlinked
title list and clicks through to access the
text and eLink.
«- Who are the partner publishers and aggregators?
Partners are made up of leading journal publishers
and aggregators who provide full-text electronic
journals on the Web to subscribers. Please
see the full list of partners.
The number of partners is growing month-by-month.
«- Do I need to subscribe to journals from
partners before using eLinks?
Yes. Once you acquire subscriptions to eJournal publications
you can fill out the sign-up form to have your account
enabled for eLinks and begin setting up your subscriptions
with our subscription manager. eLinks are usually password-protected,
meaning that you'll need to know your password
before viewing the full-text article. However,
you may have domain authentication that will
allow you to view the articles without entering
a password.
«- Will I be able to use pay-per-view?
This depends on the partner you use. Some customers
have partnered with services such as Science
Direct, SwetsWise, Infotrieve, Ingenta, and
Highwire, which offer pay-per-view services.
The customer sets up a relationship with their
preferred partner, as a distinct agreement
from their Dialog service, then enters the
corresponding information in the eLinks Manager.
The partner can then provide links and procure
articles outside the traditional annual eJournal
subscription model.
«- Is eLinking available on all Dialog platforms?
The service is available on DialogLink 5, DialogWeb,
DialogSelect, Dialog1, DialogPRO, and Dialog
Intranet Toolkit Custom Solutions. This allows
for command searchers, end users, and custom
solutions to have eLinking.
«
- Will eLinks appear automatically on
DialogClassic Web™, DialogLink 5, DialogWeb, DialogSelect,
Dialog1, DialogPRO, and Dialog Intranet Toolkit Custom
Solutions?
No. But all you have to do is have your account
enabled for the service by completing a sign
up form (contact your Dialog sales
representative for details). Then you can use
the subscription manager to set up links to
the journals of your choosing. You can take
a brief tutorial
to see how it works.
«
- Once I set up my journals, will I see
links to all partners' Web sites or just
my selected ones?
Just the partners and journals you selected
using the subscription manager. The link will
appear at the top of the abstract record that
you have retrieved in a search. Clicking the
link opens the full-text article on the partner's
site in a second browser window.
«- When I click on an eLink, in what format will the resulting record appear?
The format is determined by the publisher. In most cases it will be a PDF, although occasionally the link is to an HTML page. By clicking
on the eLink, you will open up a new browser window
that displays a page on the partner's site.
«- Do eLinks require JavaScript?
Ideally yes. Without JavaScript the new window
displaying the publisher's Web site will open
up behind the Dialog product window (either
DialogWeb,
DialogSelect, Dialog1, DialogPRO, or Dialog
Intranet Toolkit Custom Solutions). The window
will then have to be maximized in order to
view it.
«- Will eLinks work in an OpenURL Framework?
Yes. Dialog eLinks includes open URL integration,
custom URL links, and library holdings links, making
this most comprehensive as a document fulfillment
service.
In 2008 Dialog eLinks upgraded
to OpenURL 1.0, the latest standard for customers
with link resolvers.
