BIOSIS Archive Search Tips

1. Journal titles in the 1926–1968 segment are in abbreviated form, whereas titles in the post-1969 segment are given in full. When searching for a journal title across segments, OR the abbreviated form of the title with the full form to ensure comprehensive results.

2. In most cases, full author names (last name, first name, middle initial) are provided in the 1926–1968 segment. In the 1969–1998 segment of the file, only last name and first and middle initials were provided. Beginning in 1998 full author names were used if provided in the source document. When searching by author name across the segments, begin with a last name and first initial with truncation to ensure an optimal result.

Finding Japanese Sources in Engineering Files

JICST-EPlus – Japanese Science & Technology (File 94) is being removed from all hosts on March 31 at the request of the database producer.

Because of the breadth and depth of Dialog’s premier engineering collection, other databases, such as Inspec (File 2), Ei Compendex (File 8), NTIS (File 6), PASCAL (File 144) and SciSearch: A Cited Reference Science Database (File 34 ), provide extensive Japanese sources to locate scientific information to meet your engineering and high tech research needs.

Check Finding Japanese Sources in Engineering Files for content details and search tips for identifying Japanese technology information.

BIOSIS Archive Now on Dialog

An archive of approximately 1.8 million records of BIOSIS® data covering the period 1926 to 1968 is now available on Dialog. File 5 on Dialog contains data from 1926 to the present. A stand-alone file (File 552) covering just 1926 to 1968 has also been added. In addition, a second new file—File 525—contains data from 1969 to the present.

The BIOSIS database is now divided into four files, each covering a different date range. To summarize, after addition of the archive, the BIOSIS collection on Dialog is structured as follows:

  • File 5 — 1926 to present
  • File 525 — 1969 to present
  • File 55 — 1993 to present
  • File 552 — 1926 to 1968

Because BIOSIS documents the history of the life sciences worldwide, it brings together a breadth and depth of information that can’t be found elsewhere in one easily searchable format. And in doing so, it supports current life sciences research and gives today’s researchers an invaluable and unique tool.
