Tips for Using International Class Codes

EXPAND on IC=
Use EXPAND in different parts of the IC= index to view and SELECT both IPC7 and IPC/8 class codes

Search with both IPC7 and IPC/8 Codes
Use IC= to search IPC7 (up to 12 characters):

?SELECT IC=A01B-001/020
Use IC= to search IPC/8 codes (up to 16 characters):
?SELECT IC=A01B-0001/020

Use the (S) connector
Use the (S) connector to link IPC/8 class codes (IC=) to appropriate attributes (IA=)

Check display format options
IPC7 and IPC/8 class codes generally display in Formats 2,5,7,8,9,19 and also in the user-defined format IC

Changes to Therapeutic Coding of IMS Files

Some changes have been made to the therapeutic coding used in IMS R&D Focus (File 445, 955) and IMS Patent Focus (File 447, 947). If you use therapeutic codes in your searching or for Alerts, check your Alerts or search strategies to see if changes are necessary.

MEDLINE Ceases Updating for Annual Re-indexing

MEDLINE® (File 154, 155) has ceased updating as it does every year while the National Library of Medicine (NLM) re-indexes the file with new and changed Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). The file is expected to start updating again towards the end of 2006 or beginning of 2007. The full reload will take place in early 2007.

Petroleum Abstracts Reloaded

Petroleum Abstracts (File 87) has been reloaded with enhanced indexing.

Pet Food Coverage in FSTA (File 51)

Food Science and Technology Abstracts® (FSTA) (File 51) has expanded its coverage to include pet foods. Patent records on pet foods and pet food reports, books and other materials are now available.

For example, use Section Headings or Section Codes to limit to "dog foods":

Section D – Dog foods

?SELECT SH=DOG FOODS
?SELECT SC=D

Note: EXPAND SH= to view a list of Section headings and SC= for Section Heading Codes. You can also use /SH for Section Heading.

A Year of Changes for Patent Searchers

2006 has been a banner year for improved patent searching on Dialog. This article highlights some of the changes, including International Patent Classification codes (Version 8), Derwent World Patents Index enhancements and updates to other patent databases.

IPC/8 Classification Code Changes
International Patent Classification codes (IPC), Version 8, have been integrated into Dialog databases. Patent searchers can use this version of an IPC code, which more closely reflects the latest developments in technology and terminology.

To keep up to date with the latest changes to patent databases related to IPC, Version 8, visit the Dialog Web site. A full list of Dialog databases affected by the changes is available on this Web page. The page is updated regularly to provide relevant information regarding the current status of changes to these databases.

Enhanced DWPISM
New content, indexing and display enhancements have been added to Derwent World Patents Index® (File 350, 351, 352) enhancing its already rich content and overall functionality. A few highlights include:

  • Additional content with complete member level data from original patent filings in different countries or granting authorities
  • More specific indexing so that you can search new IPC code indexes for Advanced (ICA=), Core (ICC=) and Attributes (IA=)
  • All related patents that make up a "family" gathered in a single DWPI patent document
  • Data displayed in table format (e.g., patent families, chemical indexing) so that you can easily cut and paste data into spreadsheets and word processing software
  • Multiple drawings and chemical structures displaying in the relevant context in records

These enhancements improve search efficiency and help insure you do not miss information.

Other Patent File Enhancements
The new IPC (Version 8) Classification codes have been applied retrospectively to patent documents in WIPO/PCT Patents Fulltext (File 349), European Patents Fulltext (File 348) and the CLAIMS files. Reclassifying to IPC/8 in DWPI is ongoing.

It is important to make sure your search strategies are current and take advantage of new enhancements to the patent files. If you need help updating your Alerts or Saved Searches set up in Dialog patent files, contact the Dialog Alerts Bureau.
