For professional searchers who want to search ProQuest Dialog using commands, Search Solutions are now available in Command Line search on the most-requested information on ProQuest Dialog. What is the difference between patent Application Numbers and Patent Numbers?

On Dialog, when do you use AN= to search for an application number and when do you use PN= to search for a patent or publication number? The first thing to ask yourself is, “Is this a published document?”

If the document is officially published, use PN=. PN= is the field code to search for patent numbers, but it also retrieves publication numbers.
An Application/Filing Number (AN=) is assigned at the time an application is filed with a given patent receiving office. In some patent countries such as the U.S., it may be called a serial number.
A Publication Number (PN=) is assigned to an unexamined application when it is published and made available to the public, typically 18 months from the filing date. Publication numbers may be assigned to other types of documents as well such as search reports. A Patent Number (PN=) is assigned to an application once the patent is granted.
On Dialog, application numbers have a consistent format that permits cross-file searching. Always use a country code with the application number. You can qualify with /PR to restrict to priority application number, or the first application filed for the invention.

Typically to search for an application number, SELECT AN= followed by the two-letter Country Code, a space and the four-digit year (note that years may appear in a two-digit format before 2000), followed by a one- to eight-digit serial number with no leading zeros. For example, serial number US 10/524,373 filed in 2003 is searched as S AN= US 2003524373 and serial number 12/005,841 filed in 2008 is searched as S AN=US 20085841.

Like application numbers, published application numbers and patent numbers have a consistent Dialog format that permits cross-file searching. To find patent or publication numbers, SELECT PN= followed by the two-letter Country Code followed by a space and the patent number, with no punctuation. For example, published application number US 2006/0134285 is searched as S PN=US 20060134285, and patent number US 8,137,725 is searched as S PN=US 8137725.

Variations in both application and patent numbers do exist from country to country, so try EXPANDing on AN= or PN= if you're unsure of a particular number format.
