You Tube is one of the fastest growing sites for videos. If you haven't seen the new ProQuest Dialog videos on You Tube, now's the time. These two-three minute shorts describe and illustrate specific features of ProQuest Dialog—using the Translation Tool, limiting by date, using the thesaurus in Embase and more.

Search Solutions

ProQuest Dialog Search Solutions supply concise, step-by-step instructions for how to find the most-requested information on ProQuest Dialog. Topics cover searching for a biomedical subject, locating drug names, clinical trials or market share information on a drug. Other search solutions focus on technical subjects, including authors and experts in engineering fields. Available now using Advanced Search, watch for new solutions using Command Line search.

From the list of ProQuest Dialog or Classic Dialog Webinars available for registration, simply scroll down to the bottom of the list to view recordings that can be replayed at your convenience.

ProQuest Dialog Search Techniques

Use the ProQuest Dialog thesaurus in Embase^®, MEDLINE^® and ToxFile^® to find preferred vocabulary, view hierarchy and relationships and specify major focus of the articles retrieved. Recent enhancements to the thesaurus provide easier access to scope notes and subheadings and allow you to browse synonyms. In a database, such as Embase, from the Advanced Search or Command Line Search, click Thesaurus. Enter a term, for example, bronchus carcinoma, in the query box and press Find.

Link to the term you seek. The hierarchical view displays. Emtree points to lung carcinoma as the preferred term for bronchus carcinoma.

The Relational view shows broader and narrower terms. Since lung carcinoma has narrower terms, check the box for Explode. This feature will pull all the narrower terms into the search query. Check the box for Major to specify that lung carcinoma and its narrower terms are the major focus of articles found.

Click the yellow sticky note next to lung carcinoma to view synonyms.

Click the filter icon to view subheadings or qualifiers. The accordion arrows provide scope notes on the qualifiers. Emtree displays allowable disease qualifiers and shows drug qualifiers below. Check the box to the left of desired subheadings to link them to lung carcinoma and press Add to search. This will narrow the search to only articles about the disease linked to the chosen subheading(s), such as complication.

ProQuest Dialog loads the search onto the Advanced Search form. Now, check for limiters you wish to use, such as Humans, and qualify to a date range if you wish. Press Search.

Classic Dialog Search Techniques

Cast a wide trademark net with TRADEMARKSCAN^®'s Rotated Index

When you run a keyword basic search in the trademark files, you will retrieve the search terms as whole word or prefix. You can broaden your search by using the Rotated Index (TR=). This feature, unique to trademark searching, finds terms that appear in a trademark as a whole word, a prefix, a mid-word string (embedded in another word) or a suffix. Preliminary screening searches are best run within the Rotated Trademark and/or Basic Index because they provide the most comprehensive searches. The Rotated Index is ideal in finding multi-word trademarks.

Key to using the Rotated Index are the field TR= and the question mark (?) at the end of the string.

We work for a company that produces guitar strings called Dura-Tone. We want to find all the trademarks in the United States that have the words dura and tone in them.

Here's an example illustrating how it works. With the Rotated Index you can also specify that a word begins with specific letter(s).
