The Journey of a DWPI Patent
Most patent researchers have been using Derwent World Patents Index® (File 350, 351, 352) for many years. Yet do you know how the database arrives at its final form ready to be delivered to your desktop? Thomson Scientific has put together an article describing just how each record enters the database, where it gets its enhanced title and abstract and other features that you demand from DWPI. The process is interesting; read the entire article “Loading Dock to Desktop: The Journey of a DWPI Patent.”

Updates in North America and Europe
Thomson Scientific will be presenting a series of Dialog Update events this autumn in London (Oct. 17), Paris (Oct. 18), Frankfurt (Oct 19); New York City (Nov. 6), Boston (Nov. 8), and Arlington, Virginia (Dec. 4).
Featured on the program is a three-part Product Life Cycle session, reviewing the Product Life Cycle from different points of view: Technologies, Patents and Marketing.
Watch for invitations which will be sent in September.

INPADOC/Patent Family and Legal Status Enhanced with New Content, Indexing and Output Options
INPADOC/Patent Family and Legal Status (File 345), a comprehensive resource of approximately 62 million patents represented in 34 million patent families from more than 80 countries and patenting organizations, has been enhanced with new content, indexing and output options.
Content
Some of the content enhancements include:
- Coverage of all patentable technology from 1968 (specific coverage varies by patent authority), plus an extensive historical backfile for several countries dating back to the 19th century.
- Original abstracts included for recent patents where available from over 15 patenting authorities, including CA, CN, DE, EP, FR, GB, JP, US and WO, most translated into English.
- Cited Patents (CT=) and Cited Literature References (RT=) provided and searchable for AU, BE, CH, DE, EP, FR, GB, JP, NL, TR, US and WO.
- International Patent Classification Reform (version 8) (IPC8/R) Codes (IC=) provided for current patents and reclassifications provided for backfile.
Indexing
New indexing makes searching easier:
- Week Added (WA=) field indicates in which update a patent document was added to the family.
- Reassignment data where available indexed with Reassignment Name (RA=).
- Most legal status entries coded with "+" or "-" to indicate positive or negative status changes.
Display Options
Additional display options let you get exactly the information you need:
- New alerting Formats 15 and 16 provide
a summary of changes to the record made in
the current update which will allow you to
pinpoint new information more easily.
- Data presented in table format, such as patent families, priorities, IPC codes can be easily cut and pasted into spreadsheet and word processing software.
As part of these new enhancements, new report templates will be available for DialogLink
5 to accommodate the changes to the INPADOC database. The new report templates are available for download. Please note that any existing templates will not work with the new database structure.
The enhanced INPADOC database brings significantly more content, as well as indexing features that you have been asking for. Try out the file in the INPADOC ONTAP database (File 253) to view all the new enhancements. For the latest information, check the Bluesheet and the Dialog web site.
Two New European Trademarks Added to Dialog Collection
Two new trademark databases—TRADEMARKSCAN®—Latvia (File 697) and TRADEMARKSCAN®—Portugal (File 688) have joined the European trademark collection. A revised Bluesheet shows all European trademarks.
File 697 provides information on 43,120 trademark registrations published since 1993 by the Latvian Trademark Office. File 688 contains information on 194,701 trademark applications and registrations published since 1881 by the Portuguese Trademark office. Both files include inactive published trademarks from the last three years. Trademark records contain fulltext including the trademark, serial number or application number, international class(es), status, goods and services descriptions, current owner information, dates and other pertinent information. Designs and images are included, where available.
The OneSearch category, EUROTMKS, includes the two new files and covers the International Register, Community Trademarks, and the European, Scandinavian, and Central European trademark databases.
