Using Indexing in Derwent World Patents Index
To obtain all of the patent assignees
for a specific company in Derwent
World Patents Index (File 351/352, 350), use the
patent assignee code prefixes (CK= or PA=) and the
4-digit code for the company name. Derwent assigns
unique codes to companies with 50 or more patents.
The assignee code will retrieve parent and subsidiary
records. Note: Some codes contain –I
(assigned to individuals) or –N (non-unique
code). Using these codes may retrieve false hits.
?s ck=matv (Mattel)
?s pa=imbc (IBM)
Note : EXPAND on the assignee code for
a list of all subsidiaries, divisions, etc. indexed
under the code. Even if a unique code is provided
by the database, it is always best to EXPAND on the
patent assignee name as well:
?e pa=mattel

Competitive Intelligence: Newsletter Databases
for Needed Facts and Analysis
Most newsletters are written by specialists and
cover a specific niche technology or business area.
Databases such as Gale Group
Newsletter Database (File 636) and EIU:
Business Newsletters (File 629/EIBN)
offer facts, figures and analysis on a broad range
of industries. For example, by searching Gale Group
Newsletter Database, you can find concise information
on companies, products, markets and technologies
worldwide. It includes more than 100 of the most
important specialized industry newsletters published
and encompasses industries, such as biotechnology,
chemicals, defense and aerospace, energy R&D
and much more. Whether you want information on joint
ventures, industry trends and outlooks, business
climate and conditions or new products and technologies,
File 636 can provide what you need.
Other specialized newsletter files, including Dialog
Telecommunications Newsletters (File 696), Dialog
Defense Newsletters (File 264) and Dialog
Finance & Banking
Newsletters (File 267), provide collections of fulltext
newsletters in specific fields.
In addition, newsletters often cover rulings, regulations
and other legislative activities that affect an industry,
for instance, the financial community.

Custom E-mail Alerts
One of the easiest ways to keep up to date on competitive
intelligence is to set up Dialog
Alerts to monitor
everything from what products a competitor is launching
to industry forecasts to partnerships and alliances.
Alerts are available in most Dialog databases and
can be delivered via fax, e-mail or postal mail.
The new Custom
E-mail Alerts format provides more
control over the appearance of your HTML Alerts.
Using DialogLink 5 templates, you can tailor Alerts to include
only the fields you are interested in and a hyperlinked
table of contents in the beginning for easy navigation
to records of interest. You can also add graphic
images to brand the Alerts results. Dialog eLinks
to your enabled subscriptions let you click through
to the fulltext article.
Contact your account representative or the Dialog Knowledge Center to learn how you can add greater clarity, convenience and impact to your Alerts.
