We are once again looking forward to the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Annual Conference and this wonderful opportunity to see and talk with so many of our customers. One of the latest additions to ProQuest Dialog is the new Search History export feature — one that was at the top of a lot of customers’ wish lists. You can read more about it in this issue, along with how ebrary complements your current research, as well as reloads on PsycINFO^® and Dialog NewsRoom. As always, we highlight search tips, new training courses and documentation to help you make the most of your Dialog search experience.

If you weren’t able to attend Dialog’s interactive workshop, hosted by Dialog Global Customer Support in London on May 16, you missed an exciting event! With the guidance of Dialog trainers, attendees navigated ProQuest Dialog, becoming familiar with new features and functions recently released. They also reviewed customer use case scenarios that allowed the group to learn more about the way in which search is conducted on ProQuest Dialog, compared to legacy systems. Attendees were engaged, enthusiastic and enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about ProQuest Dialog. Their response was extremely positive. Watch for upcoming sessions in London, as well as WebEx sessions across Europe and North America.

“ProQuest Dialog has come a very long way for Interactive Search over recent months, and we are very keen to ensure our customers are fully equipped to get the best experience when they use it,” said Jason Leadley, Director Global Customer Support. ProQuest Dialog Updates

At the top of your wish list: Search History Export/Save As

If you haven’t tried the Search History export feature in ProQuest Dialog yet, you’ll want to check it out soon! Now you can include the Search Strategy Option on Export and Save As options, as well as Export all in Recent searches, for post processing actions on any selected items.

In the example at the right, we exported five searches from Recent searches. The search strategy was delivered in an easy-to-read tabular display and is available in multiple formats—PDF, RTF, HTML or TXT formats.

 

It’s easy on ProQuest Dialog

Yield dividends in better retrieval with Look up terms in Command Line Search

In 2008, Megan Elizabeth Donaldson published her doctoral dissertation “Development and application of novel solvents for sustainable reactions and separations.” She came up with a design for novel solvents and catalysts that reduce the environmental impact of these materials. What if you wanted to track Dr. Donaldson’s ongoing research post-doctorate? It’s easy on ProQuest Dialog.

Start out in ProQuest Dialog by choosing the Energy & Environment industry category. Go to Command Line Search and use the Look up terms feature to search for author Megan Elizabeth Donaldson.

In Look up terms, choose Look up Authors.

Enter enough of the author’s name, for example, Donaldson, M.

Scroll down to find all the possibilities for Megan Elizabeth Donaldson, including Donaldson, m, Donaldson, m.e., Donaldson ME., Donaldson, M E, etc. Keep scrolling to make sure you got Donaldson, Megan, Donaldson Meagan, Donaldson Meghan, and Donaldson, Megan E.

Once satisfied, press Add to Search .

ProQuest Dialog then creates a search statement in Command Line Search. Press Preview result counts to see how many records are found. This creates Set 1 (S1) shown below.

Next, clear the form and add the next statement combining S1 with keywords from Dr. Donaldson’s thesis topic, such as sustainability, using truncation for variant word endings on the root word sustain, allowing for up to seven characters. This time, press Search to see the results.

Results return — and you have solid leads on Dr. Donaldson’s ongoing research post-doctorate. Just imagine the many other ways in which you can put this functionality to use for your searches!

PsycINFO reloaded on ProQuest Dialog in May

PsycINFO is reloaded every year in order to refresh the database and implement the latest thesaurus. The database was reloaded on ProQuest Dialog in May. In addition to the latest thesaurus, the following changes were made: 

• New Document Type (Poetry) — Poetry was added as a new term applied to documents that are poems rather than about poetry.
• New Book Series, Volume, Issue and ISSN — Two new fields, Volume and Issue, were added in addition to Title and Translated Title. The Book Series ISSN field was changed to accommodate two types of book series ISSNs—ISSN (for Print) and eISSN (for Electronic) that allows a book record from a series to have both values noted.
• New Special Section Titles — Special Sections are thematic sections within a journal that may include several articles but not all of the articles in a particular issue, as in a Special Issue.
• Revised Book Set ISBNs — Book Set ISBNs can now be provided as 10- or 13-digit ISBNs, as well as including the binding type. A new type, Set, was added.
• New PubMed Identifier — This new field adds the PubMed unique identifiers (PMID), when available.
• New Methodology Type (Scientific Simulation) — Scientific Simulation, was added as a new term to identify the specific kind of methodology used in a research study and may appear in records for all publication types (Journal, Book, Encyclopedia, Dissertation Abstract and Electronic Collection).
• Revised Grant/Sponsorship — The field has changed and now includes sponsor names, grant/contract/award information, funding amounts, funding dates, recipients and other details about the sponsorship.
• Revised Book Table of Contents — “Created by PsycINFO” is a new term that flags books (primarily PsycBOOKS Classics titles) that do not have a source (abbreviated or otherwise) Table of Contents and for which PsycINFO creates the Table of Contents.
• New and Reloaded Thesaurus — Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms will be provided with new terms, new scope notes, and hierarchical changes in early June.

Dialog NewsRoom Annual Rollover: New database groupings forthcoming

The annual rollover for Dialog NewsRoomn (Files 990-998) will take place during June. This year we will be combining 2006-2007 data into File 996. In addition, all of the prior years will be shifted, offsetting the entire back-file collection (Files 991-995) by one year. See the list below. There will be no change in Files 989 and 990, besides the usual monthly rollover of data.

Note: There is no change or loss in the overall dates of coverage for Dialog NewsRoom, the difference being only in the databases that contain the content.
