Forthcoming MEDLINE® Annual Reload

The annual reload of MEDLINE(File 154, 155), which includes the 2008 MeSH headings and other changes, is about to begin. Daily updating will be temporarily suspended.

How Do I...? Search Aids

Don't forget to take advantage of the biomedical How Do I...? applications. Eleven commonly searched biomedical topics are shown step-by-step in DialogClassic and DialogLink 5.

Search Techniques

EXPLODing on a Term that Contains a Stop Word

The EXPLODE feature works with files that have an online thesaurus with narrower terms such as MEDLINE (Files 154, 155) or EMBASE (Files 72,73,772).

In general, to EXPLODE, an exclamation point (!) is added to the end of a term, and all narrower terms are retrieved with a search statement. Some EXPLODable terms contain stop words and the term must be enclosed in quotation marks (" ") for accurate retrieval. The exclamation point must follow the closing quotation mark.

Example:
?S HEAD AND NECK NEOPLASMS! (retrieves 0 results)

?S "HEAD AND NECK NEOPLASMS"! (retrieves 168951 records)

Greater Context for Current and Future Research in EMBASE Classic

chemistA new database—EMBASE Classic—has been added to Dialog (File 772) and DataStar (EM73) and contains the EMBASE electronic backfile from 1947 to 1973, including over 1.8 million records from the biomedical and pharmacological literature. EMBASE Classic provides greater context for current and future research and can be searched together with current EMBASE databases. It is a subscriber-only file, not available for transactional usage. Read more about this important database.

In addition, a new file (File 972 on Dialog and EMXX on DataStar) is available as a subscriber-only file, containing all EMBASE data from 1947 to the present.

Indexing Changes in EMBASE® Reload on Dialog

chemistIn the latest EMBASE reload on Dialog you will want to note several indexing changes. Nine new fields have been added, including a new field for record type (e.g., RT=Abstract and RT=Citation). In addition, the author index now includes the corresponding and contributing author in the author field (AU=) and the corresponding and contributing author affiliation in the corporate source field (CS=). Several fields (DC= descriptor code, SH= section heading and CT= conference title) have been removed. See the Bluesheet for changes to EMBASE indexing and display tags as well as dates of coverage.

New on DataStar: MEVB — Evidence-Based Medicine from MEDLINE

Emergency roomA new subset of MEDLINE® covering Evidence-Based Medicine from MEDLINE (MEVB) is now available on DataStar. The implementation of evidence-based practice is increasingly vital for healthcare professionals, and the MEVB subset will make it easier for searchers quickly to identify relevant material of interest to them. Like MEDLINE, MEVB is updated daily and includes material dating back to 1950.

Use MEVB to answer a wide variety of questions including:

  • are there any meta-analyses of measles vaccine administration?
  • what is the evidence of estrogen replacement therapy for osteoporosis?
  • are there any reviews of Wernicke encephalopathy after obesity surgery?

Check the Datasheet for more information about the new database.
