DialogWeb—Command

Use LIMITALL to restrict all subsequent SELECT statements to one or more field suffix or limit codes. Enter LIMITALL followed by a slash (/) and the suffix codes you want, separated by commas. Prefix codes cannot be used with LIMITALL.

LIMITALL can save time during long searches involving large sets, by decreasing retrieval and reducing the number of records that must be processed in the search strategy.

When field suffixes (e.g., TI,DE) are used in a LIMITALL command, all subsequent search terms will be retrieved from the Basic Index; the use of a prefix code will produce zero results. Use LIMITALL CANCEL to cancel the restriction before SELECTing terms from the Additional Indexes.

All of the following commands will cancel LIMITALL:

BEGIN Note: the FILE command does not cancel LIMITALL
LOGOFF, LOGOFF HOLD Or any LOGOFF equivalents
LIMITALL CANCEL Abbreviation: LALL CANCEL
LIMITALL– Abbreviation: LALL–
LIMITALL/ALL Abbreviation: LALL/ALL

If a new LIMITALL is entered or a LIMITALL is canceled and you want results from previous sets, you can enter the REPEAT command. REPEAT will regenerate your previous sets so that they include the results with the new LIMITALL setting.

Enter the command HELP LIMIT n (where n is the file number) to display the available limit suffix codes.

Notes:

  • The limit qualifier /MAJ will restrict retrieval to those fields in which MAJ applies (usually the Descriptor field).
  • The display of the terms searched while a LIMITALL restriction is in place does not show the restriction: the suffix codes do not display in the retrieval.
  • LIMITALL is not stored in a SAVE command or Alert strategy. If you EDIT a SaveSearch or Alert, LIMITALL is disallowed.
  • LIMITALL to accession number range or set is not available in CURRENT searches.

• To limit all subsequent SELECT commands:

• To use LIMITALL to restrict subsequent sets to a date range defined by a range of updates:

You can also use a range of updates (UD=) and then apply LIMITALL to that set. In the following example, the results of sets after the LIMITALL are from the range of updates in S1. Note: Using non-sequential updates in a set for a LIMITALL is not recommended.
