Record Links
A Links link at the top of each record presents a menu of action choices that can be accomplished using data from the record. The Links choices differ from database to database, so you may not see the same choices for each record if your results set contains records from more than one database.
Also see Set Links for link choices at the set level.
Using Links to view a fuller format of the record
The Links menu always includes a Display option with Type Full Record and Type by Specified Fields as sub-menu choices. These provide an easy alternative to entering TYPE commands to display a different format of a record:
- Click Type Full Record on the Links menuto view all available fields for the selected record.
- Click Type by Specific Fields to select data fields individually. A pop-up window displays available fields for the record’s parent database. Click to choose the fields you want to include then click OK. The record fields you selected are typed in the Retrieve buffer. Type by Specific Fields can be particularly helpful in a OneSearch, where records from different databases may have different available fields.

Note: To find format and rate information before you choose fields, you can click the record’s parent database name in the Help and Rates section of the Linking pane and select Bluesheet. In the Bluesheet, click Predefined Format Options.
Using Links to extend your Dialog search – internal linking
In certain databases, Links options provide an easy way to extend your search by taking terms from your selected record and using them as search terms in another Dialog database or in DIALINDEX®.
- Click a menu option. You may then be offered choices in sub-menu. Make your selection. For example, in Inpadoc File 345 you might select Full-text patent data >Full text patents by Patent Number. The application extracts the appropriate term(s) from the record to carry out the action.
- Look at the pop-up list that shows you the extracted terms and deselect any items you do not wish to carry forward to the new search. You can use the Reset button toremove all selections and Select All to select all items.
- When you are happy with the term list, click OK. The terms extracted from the search set are incorporated into a new search command, including ADD or BEGIN a new database if appropriate. If the checkbox Send commands to input buffer is checked, the command is entered into the Type-Ahead buffer, giving you an opportunity to change the files slated for searching etc before initiating the new search. If the checkbox is not checked, the new search executes in predetermined file(s) and results display.
Using Links to extend your Dialog search – external linking
In certain databases, Links options provide an easy way to extend your search by linking to external sources such as the Thomson Patent Store.
- Click a menu option. You may then be offered choices in sub-menu. Make your selection. For example, in US Patents Fulltext File 654 you might select Order Full Patent TPS.
DialogLink links to the external source and submits a request.
